Summer Melon Soup

Summertime means cool refreshing summers soups like rich gazpacho or this juicy summer melon soup that I made with Little Miss, my toddler.  We added ripe fruit until we found a combination we both liked.  Then I added the basil leaves for a bit of spice and some chia seeds to thicken it a little.  The chia seeds also make this light soup a bit more filling.

I was worried that the basil leaves and chia seeds would make Little Miss turn up nose, but she ended up liking finished soup a lot.  I used perfectly ripe fruit from my farm delivery service and basil leaves from our container herb garden.

The picture makes it look like a tomato based soup, but it is just the red of the watermelon and the dark green of the basil leaves.

Quick Recipe


  • 3 cups watermelon
  • 1/2 ripe peach
  • 1/2 cup cantaloupe
  • 1/4 cup chia seeds
  • one bunch of basil leaves


  1. Rinse Peach and basil leaves. Roughly chop watermelon, peach, cantaloupe, and basil leaves.
  2. Blend all ingredients in the blender until smooth.
  3. Serve immediately.
